Scherpenzeel is a Gelderse peninsula in the province of Utrecht and, together with surrounding municipalities, forms the so-called Gelderse Vallei. The Gelderse Vallei is surrounded by hills: Amersfoortse Berg, Amerongse Berg, Grebbeberg, Paasberg. A large part of these “mountains” forms the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. After the nearby Hoge Veluwe National Park, it is the largest nature park in the Netherlands.
The nature on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug was mainly formed by the moraine. During the last ice age, a glacier that once lay above the Utrechtse Heuvelrug pushed earth and rock forward. The nature here is diverse, ranging from heathlands, drifting sands, and floodplains to forests. It is all part of the national park. It became a national park in 2003 and was significantly expanded in 2013. Declaring it a national park laid a legal foundation to protect the area and keep it attractive for future generations.
The surrounding area has become quite urbanized, so it is a relief for both residents and recreational visitors that there are two such green lungs in the middle of the Netherlands.
